In 2005, The United Nations General Assembly designated January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD). It honors the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp, where more than one million innocent people were systematically murdered during the Second World War. January 27 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945.
The National Holocaust Monument Committee, together with partners, is honored to host this official commemoration, on Monday January 27, 2025 at The National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa. The commemoration will begin at 11am.
We will invite not only the Jewish Community but all Canadians to take a moment to reflect on the past and to mark this day as a day of not only remembrance but continued action to eradicate Anti-Semitism in each of our communities. The event will be live streamed and will be part of the national social media campaign “WE REMEMBER”.
