Sunday June 1 (7pm) – Renewing Ruth: A Narrative of Hesed with Rabbi Sue Levi Elwell (virtual only) (make flyer, pic attached)
We are the people who return to the same texts, year after year, season after season. Do we come back because we think the stories have changed? Or do we return because we know that in the months or perhaps years since we last read these narratives, we have changed, our perspectives have widened, we are asking questions we never asked before?
Join us as we return to Megillat Ruth, our Shavuot text, a short story that echoes many stories in today’s world. We’ll explore the rich ancient narrative of loss and connection, migration and being a stranger in a new land, risking all for hunger and protection, discovering the power of kindness/hesed in this precious, ever-renewable source-text.
Rabbi Sue Levi Elwell has been immersed in sacred stories for over 4 decades. She has served as a congregational rabbi, worked with congregations and congregational leaders through the Reform movement, taught in universities and synagogues, and written and edited works exploring Jewish women’s history and contemporary narratives. She serves as a Spiritual Director at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and divides her time between Tel Aviv and Philadelphia.
