Our speaker Vera was born on the day that the Second World War ended. Her memories of the Holocaust came from the stories she heard from her mother and her sisters, saw in the movies or read in books, definitely not from the history lessons growing up in Communist Hungary. Vera will focus her presentation on her late husband George, who lost his mother and two brothers during the Holocaust and served as a slave laborer at Bor, a copper mine in Yugoslavia, supplying the Axis forces.
For the Kristallnacht 70th Anniversary in 2008, George was asked to speak on Parliament Hill. He chose not to talk about the horrors he suffered, but instead about his hopes and the successes he was able to achieve as a young teenager.
