AN EVENING OF MEDITERRANEAN JAZZ WITH THE GUY MINTUS TRIO

The Canada Israel Cultural Foundation, The Embassy of Israel and The Vered Israel Cultural and Educational Program are excited to bring the Guy Mintus Trio to Ottawa. They will perform at Centrepointe Studio Theatre on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 7:30 PM.

Israeli-born, New York-based pianist and composer Guy Mintus takes his audiences on a true journey, bringing the sounds of the Mediterranean and the Sephardic Synagogue into exciting new grounds of Jazz and Improvised Music. The Trio, which has been playing together since 2013, mostly around the New York area, will feature some of New York’s most sought after young sidemen, double bassist, Tamir Shmerling, and drummer, Phillippe Lemm.

At 23, Guy has performed with several Grammy winning artists and Jazz Icons at such venues as the Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Apollo Theater and more. His passion for connecting people through cultural understanding has led him to interact with artists from around the world, particularly from the Middle East, serving as a musical ambassador for his country. He has won awards from such institutions as Downbeat Magazine, ASCAP, the Manhattan School of Music and the America/Canada-Israel Cultural Foundation.

Guy is a graduate of the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts in Givatayim, just outside of Tel Aviv. The school attracts students from many parts of Israel and is renowned for the quality of its programs, despite its relatively poor physical appearance. CICF Toronto has a special relationship with the school and has provided it with many needed pieces of equipment over the years. Guy has maintained his connection to the school and just visited the school to do a master class during his short winter vacation in Israel.

Israeli born bassist Tamir Shmerling, and Dutch born drummer Philippe Lemm have performed at numerous renowned Jazz festivals across Europe and North America and recorded with many notable Jazz artists. Tamir is not a stranger to the Canadian Jazz scene having played at the Toronto and Montreal Jazz festivals. Phillippe’s success took him to the True School of Music in Mumbai, India, where he served as Artist in Residence and Head of the Drum Department.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students and may be obtained from the Centrepointe Box Office at 613 580 2700 or through their website at CENTREPOINTETHEATRES.COM.
