Seymour Mayne is back with a new book, In Your Words, which offers translations from the work of Canadian Yiddish poets, and also includes a moving sequence of poems by Abraham Sutzkever, one of the great poets of the Holocaust. Complementing the Yiddish is a selection of poetry in translation from notable contemporary Hebrew poets. The careful attention to imagery and voice yields poems in translation that read with the fluency of originals. In addition, there will also be a preview from a soon-to-be-published bilingual collection of Mayne’s biblical poems, Chant de Moïse.
In Your Words: Translations from the Yiddish and the Hebrew will be launched under the auspices of the Jacob M. Lowy Collection on Sunday, September 17, at 2:30 p.m., in the Alfred Pellan Room, Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa.
The author will be joined by Sara Vered, Rebecca Margolis and Caroline Lavoie in a quadrilingual literary presentation.
The event is free and open to the public.
