In this Adath Shalom Congregation Adult Education ZOOM event, Ayala Sher and Bill Rowat use an entertaining audiovisual approach to examine the connection between the earliest Jewish Music and the music made and performed by Jewish artists today.
Part 1 From the Semitic Sound Basin to the Masorites
An introduction to the development of the "Jewish" sound via the wide variety of cantillation tropes that occurred as a result of the loss of the Second Temple. What is the oldest known Trope? Why do we instantly recognize certain groups of notes as "ours"? This part will include Jewish ethnomusicologists' reconstruction of the music of the Second Temple.
Part 2 The Mask of Joy
How did the Diaspora alter Jewish Music? This part will include the music of Turkish Europe, the Balkans, and Italy. Is this music anchored in Trope?
Part 3 The New World
This part will include Big Band, Tin Pan Alley and the radical reclamation of Jewish Identity and culture in the world of Tzaddik Records. Why do Jews get the Blues?
