Emanuel Rosen is the author of the memoir IF ANYONE CALLS, TELL THEM I DIED (Amsterdam Publishers; March 22, 2021), and the grandson of Dr. Hugo Mendel, a successful German Jewish lawyer, who escaped Germany in 1933, along with his family and moved to Tel Aviv. Rosen retraces his grandparents’ fateful European trip (1956) in an attempt to understand how Hugo Mendel came to kill himself one afternoon in Tel Aviv several months after returning to Israel from Germany. His memoir speaks to the trauma of displacement.
