King Solomon is cranky. He is in his 70s now, suffering from arthritis and various other age-related issues, including cynicism perhaps. An amateur philosopher, he reflects on his life and “The Meaning of Life.” As he shares his memories and observations, he keeps arriving at the same judgement: “Meaningless!” And yet, he does notice some light coming through the cracks, and finally arrives at an attitude of tentative Hope. He records all this in the Book of Ecclesiastes, which can be found in both the Jewish Tanakh and the Christian Bible.
