VP of Operations

Vice President Operations

The Jewish Federation of Ottawa is the premier organization servicing Ottawa’s Jewish community of 15,000 people. Reporting to the CEO, this position is responsible for the operations and governance of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa (Federation) and Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation (Foundation) and its campus.

This includes: oversight for 12 acres and capital assets of over $30 Million in 4 buildings, Talent Management support for a team of approximately 50, Governance, Ottawa Va’ad Hakashruth, and Project Management that helps build organizational capacity. This position will have 3 direct reports and is a valued member of the executive team. As with all members of the executive team, aspects of the position involve supervising and aspects involve hands-on work.


Specific responsibilities include:

Facilities Management

  • Supervise the Facilities Director and Security Manager in all aspects of their work and provide support to other managers as needed.
  • Participate in campus meeting as appropriate.
  • Ensures that effective customer service principles are operationalized

Governance

  • Serves as the subject matter expert in governance, including by-laws and implementation of government rules and regulations, and staffing relevant committees.
  • Staffs awards and nominating committees for Federation and Foundation.
  • Work collaboratively with the CEO, Executive Assistant and Foundation Associate on all aspects of Board management (e.g. agenda, meeting materials, board retreat, etc.).

Talent Management

People are our organizations most important asset and requires an investment of time and training. This including work with several volunteer committee and overseeing efforts around Employee Engagement.

  • Implementation of Employee Engagement survey and the corresponding development and evaluation of any new initiatives that bolster employee engagement.
  • Work with the Executive Assistant to oversee year-long calendar of staff meetings, professional development, and staff engagement activities.


Project management to improve organizational capacity building

Projects will vary over time, and the Vice President will be responsible for periodic projects to improve processes, lead the team in documenting process, and help lead transitions of business models.

Ottawa Va’ad Hakashruth (OVH)– Kosher Certification Organization

  • Supervise the Director of the OVH.
  • Business management (e.g. budget).
  • Manage the lay ombudsman(s) and committees on matters of community and Kashruth.

Education, Technical Expertise and Experience:

  • Prior non-profit management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree required (advanced degree preferred).
  • A minimum of seven years of progressive responsibility, with increasing management experience in complex organizations.
  • Understanding of how non-profits operate, governance and contracts is an asset.
  • Property Management experience and expertise is an asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Ottawa’s Jewish community is an asset.
