Assistant Director

Camp B'nai Brith of Ottawa is an overnight summer camp located in Quyon, Quebec. The campers’ happiness and well-being are our primary considerations. We only employ highly trained and qualified staff to ensure a safe and nurturing environment where each and every child can participate and achieve at his/her own pace.

The Assistant Director will help ensure that the mission and vision of the camp is carried out. Central to the success of this position is the ability to develop mutually respectful relationships with campers, parents and staff. The position involves considerable independent work as well as being an effective member of a team. This is a remote position year-round and on-site during the summer.

Under the direction of, and in partnership with the Camp Director the AD responsibilities year-round include the following:

1. Camper and staff recruitment year-round: Marketing and recruitment programs including home visits, off season reunions, open houses, job fairs locally and internationally, newsletters, reporting, providing updates to the CD and Board.

2. Staff: Interviews: interview as needed, reference and background checks and tracking, qualification tracking and facilitation.
Communicate with staff/supervisor candidates, check references, schedule interviews
Assist in conducting interviews
Assist in decision-making regarding hiring
Summer supervision of all staff training and recreation

3. Maintain CampMinder database.
Follow up on staff applications, communication with staff and parents (i.e. Newsletters)
Assist in preparing reports from CampMinder for CD, the Board, Assistant Directors, Supervisors and Staff

4. Provide exceptional customer service, whether by email, phone or in person.
Direct any concerns to the appropriate team member
Be prepared to step up to fill any needs or gaps as identified

5. Human Resources Management
Create and maintain staff files
Ensure necessary paperwork has been received prior to start of employment (ie. Contracts, first aid certificates, background checks)

6, Other Duties
Attend conferences as required
Social Media (i.e. Facebook, Instagram)
Organize volunteers for the camp’s representation in various citywide events
Participate enthusiastically as a member of the CBB of Ottawa team

7. Identify and meet camper and staff needs: Know and develop positive relationships with each camper and staff member
-vigilance around camper and staff well being
-Staff advocacy where appropriate
-Communication with the Director in matters of concern

8. Plan and facilitate camp programs:
Help plan camp wide programs, special days and events

9. Communicate clearly and regularly with staff

- Staff Supervision (as it relates to seasonal and year-round staff):
-Arrange/Schedule all camp staff meetings and collect items for the agenda
-Work with leadership team to ensure Staff and Supervisors comply with
daily routines, procedures and rules
-Knowledge of all camp policies and procedures and teach others the same while always modeling full and absolute compliance
-Work with the leadership team to encourage staff to develop positive relationships with their campers, create and ensure an emotionally supportive and physically safe environment, and opportunities for campers and staff to achieve success.
-Teach staff methods for behavioural management, understanding group needs, and building positive dynamics.
-Staff discipline with matters of ongoing concern being brought to the Director's attention in advance

-Assume all other responsibilities and perform whatever duties are necessary in order to assure the efficient and successful operation of Camp B’nai Brith of Ottawa
-Be prepared to step up as Acting Director in the absence of the Director from camp or lack of availability at any time year-round from the Camp Director

Understand that, at times, you will be required to work evenings and weekends as the task at hand is required. This job may include work in other areas of the organization assigned by the Director. QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will have:
A post-secondary education with experience as an Educator and/or within the Camping industry;
Two years experience as a senior member within an overnight camp’s leadership team;
The ability to provide leadership, motivation, and supervision to Administration, as well as staff (primarily young adults);
A connection to the Jewish faith;
A knowledge of health and safety regulations specific to camping situations;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
