The Jewish Federation of Ottawa and the Ottawa Post of the Jewish War Veterans of Canada have been working together to produce a new honour roll for local veterans. The purpose of the project is to produce an inclusive roll to appropriately honour the residents of the Ottawa area who served in World Wars I and II and the Korean War.

“Our community owes a debt of gratitude to those who served in the armed forces. The Ottawa Jewish community’s contribution was tremendous and we should make sure that future generations of Jews and non-Jews are aware of this history” remarked Mitchell Bellman, JFO President and CEO at a recent meeting.

Ottawa Jewish Post Commander Phil Pinkus and Adjutant Sam Ages researched and compiled a comprehensive list of names of veterans using various archival sources, including Ottawa Jewish Bulletins from the war years. They also used a 1943 scroll which hangs in the Greenberg Families Library at the SJCC.

Veterans and their families are invited to participate in this initiative by reviewing the list of names available at the Ottawa Jewish Archives and on the Federation’s Web-site. A ceremony to unveil the new list is planned for November 2010, so anyone wishing additions or revisions must do so by May 21st 2010.

Additions and revisions must be submitted to the Ottawa Post of the Jewish War Veterans of Canada in writing. Additions will be based on the following criteria:

1) the person served in World Wars I or II or the Korean War
and  
2) was a resident of Ottawa at time of enlistment
or
3) is or was a member of the Ottawa Post of the Jewish War Veterans of Canada
